System Requirements
The system requirements will vary depending on the actual number of cards you
will have per file. I would recommend a hard drive and 2 megs of ram if you
will be creating very large files of data. Please refer to the formula at the
bottom of the page for the approximate amount of RAM and disk space needed.
The very minimum requirements are: Kickstart 1.3 or newer.
512K RAM
1 floppy drive.
Here is a couple of formulas to determine if your system and Cardbase will meet
your needs. Please remember that these formulas will give you close estimated
values not exact.
Disk space formula.
(number of records)*192+200=Disk Space (bytes)
100 record file would take 19,400 bytes of disk space. (19.4K)
65,535 record file would take 12,582,920. (12.6M) aprox.
** you must also consider that there is a file that can grow to keep track of
records that you delete. The above formula will be accurate as long as no
records are deleted.
RAM requirements Formula
(number of records)*32=RAM (bytes)
100 record file would take 3,200 bytes of RAM. (3.2K)
65,535 record file would take 2,097,120. (2.1M) aprox.
** you must also consider the 160K+ for the program. The easiest way to
determine you free memory is to load Cardbase and check the system window.

Installing & Setup
Installing on a hard drive.
Insert the Cardbase disk in a floppy drive & double click on the disk icon.
From the Workbench, drag the "CardbaseFiles" drawer to HD window. You can put
it anywhere you want. You can rename the drawer also. All the files created
will be in the same drawer as the Cardbase program. You can save files in a
different locations by using the PATH button to select a new directory.
Installing on a floppy drive.
First, format a floppy disk. WB2.0 users might consider formatting the floppy
for Fast File System. (you get about 40K more disk space)
Insert the Cardbase disk in a floppy drive & double click on the disk icon.
Double click on the "CardbaseFiles" drawer. Drag the "Cardbase" icon to the
newly formatted floppy. All the files created will be in the same drawer as
the Cardbase program. You can save files in a different location by using the
PATH button to select a new directory.
Note: You may want to use a program like Power Packer to compress the Cardbase
program to give you extra disk space.

Introduction
Cardbase was designed to be simple to use and easy to understand but still have
all the features that the average trading card collector needs to keep track of
cards and generate easy to read lists of his or her collection.
Cardbase is a database program specifically designed to keep track of trading
cards. There are 10 modifiable field names to allow the maximum flexibility
for use with all types of trading cards. (sport & non-sport cards) This option
will also let you keep track of the information that is important to you.
Cardbase also has a search option that will only display the card data that
meets the criteria specified by the user. Cardbase also has an option to print
any or all the fields for each record. You can also use the print option with
the search option to only print the records that meet specific criteria.

Getting Started
Here is a quick and simple guideline to getting Cardbase up and running.
1. Install Cardbase following the instructions in the Installation & Setup
section.
2. Run the program. From the Workbench, double click on its icon.
From the CLI, type: CD (dir Cardbase is in) <return>
Cardbase <return>
3. At this point you will want to review the sections on using the various
windows in the program.
4. Select NEW and type in the name of your new database file. Press return.
5. Select LOAD. You will now be able to select you new file from the
File/Message Window.
6. You can now select ADD to start adding records, or PREFS to edit the field
names to something else. Be sure to select SAVE so your prefs will be
saved.
This is a quick run down to get you started. There are a lot of options you
will want to experiment with, so you might want to try a couple test database
files out to get the feel of how the program works.
Here are a few things to consider before starting to enter all your card data.
1. Are you happy with the field names? If not, use the PREF option to change
the field names to your own taste. Cardbase was designed to be very
flexible, you can have any field names you want and keep track of any
information you wish.
2. Are you going to use all the fields? If you don't want to use a field,
delete the field name using the PREF option. When you enter new data the
unwanted field will be skipped. This makes data entry faster and easier.
3. Do you want to have all the cards in one big file, or have many files.
For example, if you have a different file for each year, you can easily
locate and print cards in a more organized fashion. On the other hand, you
can have one big file and use the SEARCH option to only view or print the
cards that meet the criteria you set. You might want a field called "year"
so you could list and print by the year.

Using the System Information Window
This window is located in the upper right corner of the screen. This window
serves only to give you information about the system and the database file you
have loaded. Here is a quick list of the information and descriptions of the
data in this window.
Name .................. Name of file loaded.
Number of Records ..... Number of records in the file loaded.
Current Record ........ Number of the current record being viewed.
Free Memory ........... Amount of RAM you have free.
Disk Space ............ Amount of disk space free.

Using Control Window
This window is located at the bottom of the screen. It contains 13 buttons
that are used to control the program. Here is the list of buttons and there
descriptions.
About ... Brings up the title screen.
Add ..... This allows you to enter data in the fields in the Card Information
window. Press the SAVE button to save the data. Press ADD again to
exit and not save data.
Close ... This closes data file loaded.
Delete .. This allows you to delete files you have created. When selected a
list of files will appear in the File/Message window. Select the
file to delete.
Edit .... This allows you to edit the current record data. This works in the
same manner as ADD.
Load .... This allows you to select the file you wish to load from the
File/Message window. If this button does not seem to work, there are
no files to load. You will need to select NEW to create some files.
If you are sure you have files to load, check the PATH button to make
sure the program is looking in the right place for the files.
New ..... This allows you to create new data files. When selected you will be
able to enter a name for a new file in the File/Message window. You
can select NEW again to abort this option.
Path .... Normally all data files will be saved in the same directory as the
Cardbase program. If you wish to save files in a different location
enter the path. By entering no data, or removing all path data, the
program will default to the same directory as the Cardbase program.
Prefs ... This option opens the Prefs window. See "Using the Prefs Window"
section on how to set and use the preferences.
Print ... This sends data to the printer. The program will print the fields
you specify in the prefs section. If SEARCH is active PRINT will
only print the records that meet the criteria you set for search.
Remove .. This simply removes the current record.
Search .. This option works in the same manner as ADD also. You enter the data
in the fields you wish to search for. You can also use the PRINT
option while SEARCH is active. Select SEARCH again to exit the
search mode.
Quit .... (you guessed it) This quits the program.

Using the File/Message Window
This window is located in the lower right of the screen. It serves two
purposes. First it is used to select files to load or delete. Second, it is
used to enter new file names and paths.
The only other thing in this window is a vertical slider gadget. This is used
to scroll up and down through file names.
Cardbase version 1.0 (C)1993 Vic Freed all rights reserved Page 9
Using the Card Information Window
This is the big window that takes up most of the screen. This window normally
displays record data. There is a long horizontal gadget at the bottom of the
window used to move through the list of records. By simply sliding this gadget
back and forth you can quickly locate any record. There are two other buttons
located in the lower right of the window, "Ahead" and "Back". These take you
ahead one record or back one record. If you hold them down they will continue
displaying records in a fast forward/rewind fashion.
If you select ADD or EDIT the window will change to allow you to edit record
data. If you select SEARCH the window will change to allow you to enter data
to search for.
Cardbase version 1.0 (C)1993 Vic Freed all rights reserved Page 10
Using the Prefs Window
This window will appear when PREFS is selected. This window allows users to
change field names, mark the fields they wish to print and set the number of
lines to print per page. There are three buttons in the lower right of the
window. Here is a list and description.
Load ..... This reloads the prefs for the file you have loaded.
Save ..... This saved the setting for the file you have loaded.
Reset .... This resets all the settings to the defaults.
Be sure to save all your settings. If you ADD files the program will revert to
the saved prefs.
There are two special fields to mention. The "Number & Name" field is the
field that is sorted. The other is "Rookie" field. This field serves as a tag
type field. You basically toggle a check mark to tag a record. In the default
settings you could use it to select the Rookie cards. If you do not wish to
use a field, simply delete the field name.
After each field name there is a box that you can select. Selecting these
boxes determines the fields to print. As you select boxes, please notice the
"chars per line" amount. This is the number of characters your printer must be
able to print per line. Since there is such a wide variety of printers
available I will leave it up to you to set you printer to the correct CPI. In
many cases simply setting the Workbench printer prefs will do the job.
The last thing to set is the TOTAL LINES per page. Usually this is 66 (6 LPI)
or 88 (8 LPI).
Cardbase version 1.0 (C)1993 Vic Freed all rights reserved Page 11
Printing Data
The first thing you must do is to set the fields to be printed. This is done
by selecting the boxes after the field names in the Cardbase preference window.
You will also want to make sure the lines per page is set correctly. If your
printer is set for 6 lines per inch you will want the lines set for 66. I'm
assuming you are using 11 inch paper. (6x11=66)
Here is how Cardbase will print your data:
PAGE # "File Name"
Field Name 5 Field Name 1 Field Name 2 etc.
* data data data data
Notice the "*". This represents if field 10 was selected or not. Field 10
serves as a marker field. You can use it to mark rookie cards or cards you
might need.
Also Notice that Field 5 is printed first. Since this is the sorting field
you would want this to be the first column.
If you decide to not print a field, the others will move left and take its
place.
